22. Allow the transmission to drain.

25. Automatic Transmission Fluid Pan Bolt (1) » Install and hand tighten [16x]

26. Remove the drain pan.

29. Repeat the following steps for all transmission torque converter bolts (1): 29.1. Rotate the harmonic balancer center bolt clockwise ONLY, to align the transmission torque converter bolt with the starter opening. 29.2. Transmission Torque Converter Bolt (1) » Remove [6x]
30. Lower the transmission enough to gain access to the transmission vent hose clip bracket.

31. Remove the engine wiring harness retainer (1) and reposition the engine wiring harness (2) as necessary.

32. Remove the transmission vent hose retainer (1) then reposition the transmission vent hose (2) as necessary.

33. Remove the transfer case vent hose retainer (1).

37. Transmission Fluid Cooler Pipe Connector Bolt (1) » Remove
38. Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet and Outlet Pipe (2) @ Automatic Transmission » Remove
39. Cap the fittings and plug the holes when removing the transmission fluid cooler pipes.
40. Transmission Fluid Cooler Seal (3) » Remove and DISCARD

41. Disconnect the transmission wiring harness connector (1).
42. Remove the wiring harness retainers as necessary.

43. Remove the fuel feed and return front hose bracket nut (1).
44. Remove the fuel feed and return front hose bracket bolt (2) and reposition the fuel feed and return front hose as necessary.
45. Lower the transmission to gain access to the top and sides of the transmission.

Note

Reposition the transmission cooler pipe bracket as necessary.

49. Pull the transmission (3) straight back.

Warning

The torque converter must be held to the torque converter housing by a retaining device such as shipping brackets. Without the retaining device, the torque converter may slide forward, disengaging the oil pump, or may fall completely out of the transmission causing personal injury and/or property damage.

50. Install the DT-21366 Converter Holding Strap (1) onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.

51. Automatic Transmission (1) » Remove Installation Procedure

52. Note the new transmission unique number (TUN).

53. Install the DT-21366 Converter Holding Strap (1) onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.

54. Support the transmission with a suitable transmission jack.

55. Raise the transmission (1) into place.

56. Remove the DT-21366 Converter Holding Strap (1).

Note

The torque converter must rotate freely by hand.

6. Slide the transmission (3) straight onto the locating pins.

Refer to Fastener Caution.

7. Transmission Stud (1) Install and tighten — Fastener Specifications

Note

Position the transmission cooler pipe bracket as necessary.

8. Transmission Bolt (2) Install and tighten [2x] — Fastener Specifications

9. Transmission Stud (1) Install and tighten [5x] — Fastener Specifications

10. Position the fuel feed and return front hose.

11. Install and tighten the fuel feed and return front hose bracket nut (1). Fastener Specifications

12. Install and tighten the fuel feed and return front hose bracket bolt (2). Fastener Specifications

13. Install the transmission vent hose clip bracket (2).

14. Install and tighten the transmission vent hose clip bracket nut (1). Fastener Specifications

15. Reposition the transmission vent hose (2) then install transmission vent hose retainer (1).

16. Transfer Case Vent Hose (2) » Install

17. Install the transfer case vent hose retainer (1).

18. Reposition the engine wiring harness (2) then install the engine wiring harness retainer (1).

19. Connect the transmission wiring harness connector (1).

20. Install the wiring retainer as necessary..

21. Raise the transmission into place.

22. If NEW threaded components are being installed, loosen the adhesive using a metal pick or similar tool before proceeding. If threaded components are reused, prepare the threaded components using the following steps: 22.1. Remove any loose cured adhesive from the external threads of the components using a lint free cloth. 22.2. Thread the cleaned components into the internal mating threads and remove to loosen trapped cured adhesive. 22.3. Apply thread locking adhesive to the external threads of the components. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers 22.4. Ensure there are no gaps in the thread locking adhesive once applied to the component.

Note

Rotate the crankshaft balancer center bolt clockwise ONLY, to align the transmission torque converter bolt with the starter opening.

25. Transmission Converter Cover Bolt (1) » Install and tighten — Fastener Specifications

26. Starter (1) » Install

27. Electrical Connector (3) » Connect

28. Protective Sleeve (4) » Install

30. Starter Solenoid Cable Nut (2) » Install and tighten — Fastener Specifications

39. Transmission Converter Cover - Left Side (2) » Install

41. Transfer Case Assembly » Install — Transfer Case Assembly Replacement

42. Transmission Fluid Cooler Seal (3) » Install NEW

43. Remove the caps from the fittings and plugs from the holes before installing the transmission fluid cooler pipes.

44. Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet and Outlet Pipe (2) @ Automatic Transmission » Install

45. Transmission Fluid Cooler Pipe Connector Bolt (1) » Install and tighten — Fastener Specifications

46. Lower the vehicle.

47. Connect the battery negative cable. Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection

48. Fill the transmission to the proper level with NEW transmission fluid. Transmission Fluid Fill Procedure

49. Perform the solenoid valve characterization. Q77 Transmission Control Solenoid Valve Characterization Programming

Note

The Service Fast Learn procedure must be performed when one of the following repairs have been made to the vehicle. Failure to perform the procedure after one of the following repairs may result in poor transmission performance, as well as transmission DTCs being set: The service fast learn procedure must be performed when any of the following repairs has been made to the transmission. Pressure regulating solenoid replacement Valve body repair or replacement Any service/repair in response to a shift quality concern Any internal transmission service, repair, overhaul, or replacement Torque converter replacement TCM replacement Transmission assembly replacement
