Warning

In order to avoid being burned, do not service the exhaust system while it is still hot. Service the system when it is cool.

Warning

Avoid contact with HOT components. Wear safety glasses and protective gloves to avoid personal injury. Removal Procedure

Caution

Refer to Heated Oxygen and Oxygen Sensor Caution.

Note

The heated oxygen sensor in-line connector and louvered end MUST be kept clear of all grease, dirt, and other contaminants. Do NOT use cleaning solvents of any type. Do NOT drop or roughly handle the sensor. The heated oxygen sensor MAY be difficult to remove when the engine temperature is less than 48°C (120°F).

7. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor electrical connector. (1)
8. Using a suitable tool, remove the heated oxygen sensor bank 1 sensor 1 (1).

9. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor electrical connector. (1)
10. Using a suitable tool, remove the heated oxygen sensor bank 1 sensor 2 (1).

57. Lower the transmission enough to gain access to the transmission vent hose clip bracket.

58. Remove the engine wiring harness retainer (1) and reposition the engine wiring harness (2) as necessary.

59. Remove the transmission vent hose retainer (1) then reposition the transmission vent hose (2) as necessary.

60. Remove the transmission vent hose clip bracket nut (1).

71. Cap the opening to prevent contamination.

74. Reposition the fuel feed and evaporative emission and return hose (3) as necessary.

Warning

The torque converter must be held to the torque converter housing by a retaining device such as shipping brackets. Without the retaining device, the torque converter may slide forward, disengaging the oil pump, or may fall completely out of the transmission causing personal injury and/or property damage.

79. Install the DT-21366 Converter Holding Strap (1) onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.

83. Note the new transmission unique number (TUN).

84. Support the transmission with a suitable transmission jack.

86. If NEW threaded components are being installed, loosen the adhesive using a metal pick or similar tool before proceeding. If threaded components are reused, prepare the threaded components using the following steps: 4.1. Remove any loose cured adhesive from the external threads of the components using a lint free cloth. 4.2. Thread the cleaned components into the internal mating threads and remove to loosen trapped cured adhesive. 4.3. Apply thread locking adhesive to the external threads of the components. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers 4.4. Ensure there are no gaps in the thread locking adhesive once applied to the component.

5. Transmission Mount Bolt (1) » Install and tighten [2x] — Fastener Specifications

6. Install the DT-21366 Converter Holding Strap (1) onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.

7. Raise the transmission (1) into place.

8. Remove the DT-21366 Converter Holding Strap (1).

Note

The torque converter must rotate freely by hand.

9. Slide the transmission (3) straight onto the locating pins.

10. Transmission Stud (1) Install and tighten — Fastener Specifications

11. Transmission Bolt (2) Install and tighten [2x] — Fastener Specifications

12. Transmission Stud (1) Install and tighten [5x] — Fastener Specifications

13. Install the fuel feed and evaporative emission and return hose (3).

14. Fuel Feed and Return Front Hose Bracket Nut (1) » Install and tighten — Fastener Specifications

15. Fuel Feed and Return Front Hose Bracket Bolt (2) » Install and tighten — Fastener Specifications

16. Install the transmission vent hose clip bracket (2).

17. Install and tighten the transmission vent hose clip bracket nut (1). Fastener Specifications

18. Reposition the transmission vent hose (2) then install transmission vent hose retainer (1).

19. Reposition the engine wiring harness (2) then install the engine wiring harness retainer (1).

20. Transmission Heat Shield (3) » Install

21. If NEW threaded components are being installed, loosen the adhesive using a metal pick or similar tool before proceeding. If threaded components are reused, prepare the threaded components using the following steps: 21.1. Remove any loose cured adhesive from the external threads of the components using a lint free cloth. 21.2. Thread the cleaned components into the internal mating threads and remove to loosen trapped cured adhesive. 21.3. Apply thread locking adhesive to the external threads of the components. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers 21.4. Ensure there are no gaps in the thread locking adhesive once applied to the component.

22. Transmission Heat Shield Bolt (2) » Install and tighten — Fastener Specifications

23. Transmission Heat Shield Bolt (1) » Install and tighten [2x] — Fastener Specifications

24. Install the wiring harness.

25. Uncap the fittings and unplug the holes of the transmission.

26. Connect the wiring harness retainers. (2)

27. Connect the electrical connector. (1)

28. If NEW threaded components are being installed, loosen the adhesive using a metal pick or similar tool before proceeding. If threaded components are reused, prepare the threaded components using the following steps: 28.1. Remove any loose cured adhesive from the external threads of the components using a lint free cloth. 28.2. Thread the cleaned components into the internal mating threads and remove to loosen trapped cured adhesive. 28.3. Apply thread locking adhesive to the external threads of the components. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers 28.4. Ensure there are no gaps in the thread locking adhesive once applied to the component.

Note

Rotate the crankshaft balancer center bolt clockwise ONLY, to align the transmission torque converter bolt with the starter opening.

45. Transmission Converter Cover - Left Side (2) » Install

46. Transmission Converter Cover Bolt (1) » Install and tighten — Fastener Specifications

47. Propeller Shaft (1) » Install

48. Align the reference marks made between the rear wheel drive shaft flange and the front and rear propeller shaft (2).

49. If NEW threaded components are being installed, loosen the adhesive using a metal pick or similar tool before proceeding. If threaded components are reused, prepare the threaded components using the following steps: 49.1. Remove any loose cured adhesive from the external threads of the components using a lint free cloth. 49.2. Thread the cleaned components into the internal mating threads and remove to loosen trapped cured adhesive. 49.3. Apply thread locking adhesive to the external threads of the components. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers 49.4. Ensure there are no gaps in the thread locking adhesive once applied to the component.

50. Install the 4 rear propeller shaft bolts (1) and tighten in a crisscross pattern. Fastener Specifications.

51. Exhaust System Seal - Right Side (1) » Install NEW

52. Exhaust System Seal - Left Side (1) » Install NEW

53. Three-Way Catalytic Converter (1) » Install

54. Transmission Support Crossmember (1) » Install

55. Transmission Support Crossmember Bolt (2) » Install [4x]

56. Transmission Support Crossmember Nut (1) » Install and tighten [4x] — Fastener Specifications

57. Transmission Mount Nut (1) » Install and tighten — Fastener Specifications

58. Remove the support from the transmission.

59. Install the wiring harness as necessary and connect the 4 wiring harness retainers (3).

60. Exhaust Front Pipe Nut - Right Side (1) » Install and tighten [3x] — Fastener Specifications

61. Exhaust Front Pipe Nut - Left Side (1) » Install and tighten [3x] — Fastener Specifications

62. Exhaust Muffler (2) @ Three-Way Catalytic Converter (3) » Connect

63. Exhaust Pipe Clamp (1) » Tighten — Fastener Specifications

64. Connect the heated oxygen sensor electrical connector. (1)

65. Connect the heated oxygen sensor electrical connector. (1)

Caution

Refer to Component Fastener Tightening Caution.

Note

A special anti-seize compound is used in the HO2S threads. The compound consists of liquid graphite and glass beads. The graphite tends to burn away, but the glass beads remain, making the sensor easier to remove. New, or service replacement sensors already have the compound applied to the threads. If the sensor is removed from an exhaust component and if for any reason the sensor is to be reinstalled, the threads must have anti-seize compound applied before reinstallation. 66. Using a suitable tool, install and tighten the heated oxygen sensor bank 1 sensor 2 (1). Fastener Specifications

67. Connect the heated oxygen sensor electrical connector. (1)

68. Using a suitable tool, install and tighten the heated oxygen sensor bank 1 sensor 1 (1). Fastener Specifications

69. Connect the heated oxygen sensor electrical connector. (1)

70. Exhaust Front Pipe Heat Shield (2) » Install

71. Exhaust Heat Shield Bolt (1) » Install and tighten — Fastener Specifications

72. Exhaust Front Pipe Heat Shield (2) » Install

73. Exhaust Heat Shield Bolt (1) » Install and tighten — Fastener Specifications

74. Front Wheelhouse Liner - Left Side and Right Side » Install [2x] — Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement

75. Uncap the fittings and unplug the holes of the transmission.

76. Transmission Fluid Cooler Seal (3) » Install NEW

77. Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet and Outlet Pipe (2) @ Automatic Transmission » Install

78. Transmission Fluid Cooler Pipe Connector Bolt (1) » Install and tighten — Fastener Specifications

79. Connect the battery negative cable. Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection

80. Fill the transmission to the proper level with NEW transmission fluid. Transmission Fluid Fill Procedure

81. Perform the solenoid valve characterization. Q77 Transmission Control Solenoid Valve Characterization Programming

Note

The Service Fast Learn procedure must be performed when one of the following repairs have been made to the vehicle. Failure to perform the procedure after one of the following repairs may result in poor transmission performance, as well as transmission DTCs being set: The service fast learn procedure must be performed when any of the following repairs has been made to the transmission.
