Transmission Fluid Cooling Description and Operation

General Information Removal of waste heat from the transmission oil is performed by a heat exchanger that is employed as part of the vehicle cooling system. This heat exchanger is an auxiliary air to oil cooler located in front of the condenser. The control of fluid flow through the transmission cooler varies by the type of engine. Vehicles with L84/L87 engine have a thermostat internal to the transmission that regulates the fluid flow to the transmission cooler feed line. Vehicles with LM2 engine have a bypass valve mounted on the side of the transmission that regulates the fluid flow to the transmission cooler feed line. Internal to the transmission on all vehicles, an oil pump is used to circulate oil through the transmission oil cooler via feed lines. As fluid moves through the transmission oil cooler, the transmission oil waste heat is transferred to external air. The fluid is then pumped through the transmission oil cooler return line to the transmission.
