DTCs related to the following system/component = Not Set
B9 Ambient Air Temperature Sensor
B34 Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor — Circuit
B36 Engine Oil Temperature Sensor
B65 Intake Manifold Pressure and Air Temperature Sensor
B203 Radiator Coolant Temperature Sensor
Ambient Air Temperature = Warmer than −20°C (−4°F)
Engine Block Heater = Inactive /Not Detected
Engine Off Time = For greater than 6 h
Ignition = On
Frequency the DTC runs = Once — Per cold start-up — After the running conditions are met
Conditions for Setting the DTC
Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor or Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor 2-6 & Intake Air
Temperature Sensor = Not within 7.40°C (13.32°F) of each other @ Cold Start-Up

Circuit/System Verification
- Verify no other DTCs are set.
⇒ If other DTCs are set
Refer to: Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle
⇓ If no other DTCs are set
- Ignition/Vehicle » Off — For greater than 6 h
- Ignition » On / Vehicle » In Service Mode
- Verify the following parameters are within 15.8°C (28°F) of each other:
Ambient Air Temperature Sensor
ECT Sensor
IAT Sensor
⇒ If not within 15.8°C (28°F) of each other
{ Ambient Air Temperature Sensor } Refer to: DTC P0071-P0074
{ ECT Sensor } Refer to: Circuit/System Testing
{ IAT Sensor } Refer to: DTC P0097-P0099, P00F4-P00F6, or P0112-P0114
⇓ If within 15.8°C (28°F) of each other
- Verify the scan tool parameter: ECT Sensor = The value should not spike or drop out.
Perform the action while monitoring the parameter:
Wiggle the harness and connector: B34 Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor
Wiggle the harness and connector: K20 Engine Control Module
⇒ If the value spikes or drops out
Repair as necessary » Wiring / Terminal(s) / Electrical Connector(s)
⇓ If the value does not spike or drop out
- Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. You may also operate the
vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data.
Verify the DTC does not set.
⇒ If the DTC sets
Refer to: Circuit/System Testing
⇓ If the DTC is not set
- All OK.
Circuit/System Testing
- Ignition/Vehicle & All vehicle systems » Off
- Disconnect the appropriate electrical connector: B34 Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor
- Test for less than 10 Ω between the test points: Low Reference circuit terminal 2 & Ground
⇒ If 10 Ω or greater
3.1. Disconnect the appropriate electrical connector: K20 Engine Control Module
3.2. Test for less than 2 Ω between the test points: Low Reference circuit terminal 2 @
Component harness & The other end of the circuit @ Control module harness
⇒ If 2 Ω or greater » Repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.
⇒ If less than 2 Ω » Replace the component: K20 Engine Control Module
⇓ If less than 10 Ω
- Ignition » On / Vehicle » In Service Mode
- Verify the scan tool parameter: ECT Sensor = Colder than −39°C (−38°F)
⇒ If warmer than −39°C (−38°F)
5.1. Ignition/Vehicle » Off
5.2. Disconnect the appropriate electrical connector: K20 Engine Control Module
5.3. Test for infinite resistance between the test points: Signal circuit terminal 1 @ Component
harness & Ground
⇒ If less than infinite resistance » Repair the short to ground on the circuit.
⇒ If infinite resistance » Replace the component: K20 Engine Control Module
⇓ If colder than −39°C (−38°F)
- Connect a 3 A fused jumper wire between the test points: Signal circuit terminal 1 & Low
Reference circuit terminal 2
- Verify the scan tool parameter: ECT Sensor = Warmer than 149°C (300°F)
⇒ If 149°C (300°F) or colder
7.1. Ignition/Vehicle » Off & Remove » Jumper wire(s)
7.2. Disconnect the appropriate electrical connector: K20 Engine Control Module
7.3. Ignition » On / Vehicle » In Service Mode
7.4. Test for less than 1 V between the test points: Signal circuit terminal 1 @ Component
harness & Ground
⇒ If 1 V or greater » Repair the short to voltage on the circuit.
⇓ If less than 1 V
7.5. Ignition/Vehicle » Off
7.6. Test for less than 2 Ω between the test points: Signal circuit terminal 1 @ Component
harness & The other end of the circuit @ Control module harness
⇒ If 2 Ω or greater » Repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.
⇒ If less than 2 Ω » Replace the component: K20 Engine Control Module
⇓ If warmer than 149°C (300°F)
- Test or replace the component: B34 Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor
Component Testing
- Ignition/Vehicle » Off
- Disconnect the appropriate electrical connector: B34 Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor
- Test the resistance between the test points: Signal circuit terminal 1 & Low Reference circuit
terminal 2 @ Component
- Verify the value is within the range listed in the table: Temperature Versus Resistance
⇒ If not in the specified range
Replace the appropriate component: B34 Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor
⇓ If in the specified range
- Test for infinite resistance between the test points: Each terminal of the component & The
component’s housing
⇒ If less than infinite resistance
Replace the appropriate component: B34 Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor
⇓ If infinite resistance
- All OK.
