Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement

Removal Procedure

Caution

With wheels of the vehicle facing straight ahead, secure the steering wheel utilizing steering column anti-rotation pin, steering column lock, or a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the following components: The steering column The intermediate shaft(s) The steering gear After disconnecting these components, do not rotate the steering wheel or move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow this procedure may cause the SIR coil assembly to become un-centered and cause possible damage to the SIR coil. If you think the SIR coil has became un-centered, refer to your specific SIR coil’s centering procedure to re-center SIR Coil.

1. Secure the steering wheel so it will not turn when the intermediate steering shaft is disconnected.

4. Mid Intermediate Steering Shaft Bolt (1) » Remove

5. Upper Intermediate Steering Shaft (1) @ Intermediate Steering Shaft » Separate
6. Raise and support the vehicle. Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle

Note

The proper position of the underbody skid shield is between the underbody splash shield and the front frame.

7. {with RC1} Remove the underbody skid shield. 7.1. Underbody Skid Shield Bolt (1) » Remove [2x] 7.2. Underbody Splash Shield Bolt (2) » Remove [2x] 7.3. Underbody Skid Shield (3) » Remove

8. {without RC1} Remove the underbody skid shield. 8.1. Underbody Skid Shield Bolt (1) » Remove [4x] 8.2. Underbody Skid Shield (2) » Remove

9. Front Bumper Fascia Air Deflector Bolt (1) » Remove [10x]
10. Front Bumper Fascia Extension Bolt (2) » Remove [8x]

11. Pull the front bumper fascia extension (1) rearward and down from the front bumper fascia.

12. Front Bumper Fascia Extension Bolt (2) » Remove [4x]
13. Pull the front bumper fascia extension rear (4) rearward and down.

14. Intermediate Steering Shaft Lower Bolt (1) » Remove

16. Intermediate Steering Shaft (1) » Install

17. If a NEW threaded component is being installed, loosen the adhesive using a metal pick or similar tool before proceeding. If threaded component is reused, prepare the threaded component using the following steps: 2.1. Remove any loose cured adhesive from the external threads of the component using a lint free cloth. 2.2. Thread the cleaned component into the internal mating threads and remove to loosen trapped cured adhesive. 2.3. Apply thread locking adhesive to the external threads of the component. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers 2.4. Ensure there are no gaps in the thread locking adhesive once applied to the component.

3. Intermediate Steering Shaft Lower Bolt (1) » Install and tighten — Fastener Specifications

4. Front Bumper Fascia Extension - Rear (4) » Install

5. Front Bumper Fascia Extension Bolt (2) » Install and tighten [4x] — Fastener Specifications

6. Front Bumper Fascia Extension (1) » Install

7. Front Bumper Fascia Extension Bolt (2) » Install and tighten [8x] — Fastener Specifications

8. Front Bumper Fascia Air Deflector Bolt (1) » Install and tighten [10x] — Fastener Specifications

9. {without RC1} Install the underbody skid shield. 9.1. Underbody Skid Shield (2) » Install 9.2. Underbody Skid Shield Bolt (1) » Install and tighten [4x] — Fastener Specifications

Note

The proper position of the underbody skid shield is between the underbody splash shield and the front frame.

10. {with RC1} Install the underbody skid shield. 10.1. Underbody Skid Shield (3) » Install 10.2. Underbody Splash Shield Bolt (2) » Install and tighten [2x] — Fastener Specifications 10.3. Underbody Skid Shield Bolt (1) » Install and tighten [2x] — Fastener Specifications

11. Lower the vehicle.

12. Upper Intermediate Steering Shaft (1) @ Intermediate Steering Shaft » Install

13. If a NEW threaded component is being installed, loosen the adhesive using a metal pick or similar tool before proceeding. If threaded component is reused, prepare the threaded component using the following steps: 13.1. Remove any loose cured adhesive from the external threads of the component using a lint free cloth. 13.2. Thread the cleaned component into the internal mating threads and remove to loosen trapped cured adhesive. 13.3. Apply thread locking adhesive to the external threads of the component. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers 13.4. Ensure there are no gaps in the thread locking adhesive once applied to the component.

14. Mid Intermediate Steering Shaft Bolt (1) » Install and tighten — Fastener Specifications
15. Front Wheelhouse Liner - Left Side » Install — Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement
16. Install the left front tire and wheel assembly. Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
17. Remove the device used to prevent steering column rotation.
