Rear Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Left Side (G96)

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
  2. Remove the rear tire and wheel assembly. Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation

  1. Position a drain pan under the rear differential carrier (1).
  2. Rear Axle Housing Drain Plug (2) » Remove
  3. Rear Axle Housing Fill Plug (3) » Remove
  4. Clean the rear axle housing drain and fill plugs. Allow the fluid to completely drain.

  1. Disconnect the limited slip differential clutch motor electrical connector (1)

  1. Limited Slip Differential Clutch Motor Bolt (3) » Remove [4x]
  2. Limited Slip Differential Clutch Motor (2) » Remove
  3. Limited Slip Differential Clutch Motor Seal (1) » Remove
  4. Have an assistant apply the brakes.

  1. Rear Wheel Drive Shaft Nut (1) » Remove and DISCARD

  1. Install the DT-45859 Axle Remover (2) to the rear wheel hub and secure with 2 wheel nuts (1) hand tightened.
  2. Using the DT-45859 Axle Remover (2), release the rear wheel drive half shaft from the rear wheel hub.
  3. Remove the 2 wheel nuts (1) and the DT-45859 Axle Remover (2) from the rear wheel hub.

  1. Rear Wheel Drive Shaft Bolt (1) » Remove [8x]

  1. Rear Wheel Drive Shaft (1) » Remove

  1. Remove and DISCARD the rear wheel drive shaft washer (1). Installation Procedure

  2. Install NEW rear wheel drive shaft washer (1).

  3. If reusing the rear wheel drive shaft, inspect the boots for damage before re-installing.

  4. Rear Wheel Drive Shaft (1) » Install

  5. If NEW threaded components are being installed, loosen the adhesive using a metal pick or similar tool before proceeding. If threaded components are reused, prepare the threaded components using the following steps: 4.1. Remove any loose cured adhesive from the external threads of the components using a lint free cloth. 4.2. Thread the cleaned components into the internal mating threads and remove to loosen trapped cured adhesive. 4.3. Apply thread locking adhesive to the external threads of the components. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers 4.4. Ensure there are no gaps in the thread locking adhesive once applied to the component.

  1. Rear Wheel Drive Shaft Bolt (1) » Install and tighten [8x] — Fastener Specifications
  2. Have an assistant apply the brakes.
  1. Rear Wheel Drive Shaft Nut (1) » Install NEW and tighten — Fastener Specifications

  2. Limited Slip Differential Clutch Motor Seal (1) » Install

  3. Limited Slip Differential Clutch Motor (2) » Install

  4. Limited Slip Differential Clutch Motor Bolt (3) » Install and tighten [4x] — Fastener Specifications

  5. Connect the limited slip differential clutch motor electrical connector (1)

  1. Rear Axle Housing Drain Plug (2) » Install and tighten — Fastener Specifications
  2. Fill the rear differential carrier with the appropriate amount and type of axle lubricant: Approximate Fluid Capacities Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
  3. The gear lubricant level should be 1–2 mm (0.039-0.079 in) below the fill plug opening.
  4. Rear Axle Housing Fill Plug (3) » Install and tighten — Fastener Specifications
  5. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
  6. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
