Rear Disc Brake Pads Replacement

The battery must be disconnected to prevent the brake master cylinder from pressurizing the hydraulic system during its automated self diagnostic tests that can possibly occur when a door is opened or the key transmitter is activated. Failure to follow this precaution may cause personal injury.

Note

Always replace disc brake pads in axle sets.

Use all components included with the service kit.

Note

Only the left rear wheel is equipped with the rear disc brake pad wear sensor.

If installing new brake pads, a NEW brake pad wear sensor must be installed. Removal Procedure

1. Set the parking brake in Service Mode. Parking Brake Service Mode Selection
2. Inspect the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir.
3. If the brake fluid level is higher than midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, remove brake fluid to the midway point before proceeding.
4. If the brake fluid level is midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, no brake fluid needs to be removed before proceeding.
5. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
6. Raise and support the vehicle. Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
7. Remove the rear tire and wheel assemblies. Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation

8. { If equipped } Rear Brake Bleeder Valve Cap (1) » Remove
9. { If equipped } Disconnect the electrical connector. (3)
10. { If equipped } Rear Disc Brake Pad Wear Sensor (2) » Remove and DISCARD

Note

DO NOT use any air tools to remove or install the guide pin bolts. Use hand tools ONLY.

Caution

Support the brake caliper with heavy mechanic wire, or equivalent, whenever it is separated from its mount and the hydraulic flexible brake hose is still connected. Failure to support the caliper in this manner will cause the flexible brake hose to bear the weight of the caliper, which may cause damage to the brake hose and in turn may cause a brake fluid leak.

Note

It is not necessary to disconnect the rear brake hose.

13. Remove the rear brake caliper (1) and support it with heavy mechanics wire.

15. Rear Disc Brake Pad Spring (1) » Remove and DISCARD [4x] Installation Procedure

16. Using an appropriate brake caliper piston spanner tool, slowly rotate the brake caliper piston clockwise while applying inward pressure to the brake caliper piston until the piston is fully seated in the brake caliper housing.

17. Rear Disc Brake Pad Spring (1) » Install NEW [4x]

DO NOT use any air tools to remove or install the guide pin bolts. Use hand tools ONLY.

5. Rear Brake Caliper Guide Pin Bolt (1) » Install and tighten [2x] — Fastener Specifications

6. Electrical Connector (1) @ Rear Parking Brake Actuator » Connect

7. { If equipped } Rear Disc Brake Pad Wear Sensor (2) » Install NEW

8. { If equipped } Connect the electrical connector. (3)

9. { If equipped } Rear Brake Bleeder Valve Cap (1) » Install

10. Install the rear tire and wheel assemblies. Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation

11. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.

12. With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of its travel distance.

13. Slowly release the brake pedal.

14. Wait 15 seconds, then repeat steps 12 - 13 until a firm brake pedal is obtained. This will properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads.

15. Connect the battery negative cable. Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection

16. Fill the brake master cylinder reservoir to the maximum-full level with GM approved brake fluid from a clean, sealed brake fluid container. Brake Master Cylinder Reservoir Filling

17. Calibrate the park brake. Park Brake Calibration

18. { If equipped } Reset the brake pad life monitor system. Brake Pad Life Monitoring Reset

19. Burnish the brake pads and rotors. 19.1. Select a smooth road with little or no traffic. 19.2. Accelerate the vehicle to 48 km/h (30 mph).

Note

Use care to avoid overheating the brakes while performing this step. 19.3. Using moderate to firm pressure, apply the brakes to bring the vehicle to a stop. Do not allow the brakes to lock. 19.4. Repeat steps 19.2 and 19.3 until approximately 20 stops have been completed. Allow sufficient cooling periods between stops in order to properly burnish the brake pads and rotors.
